As a basic type of wood at STAUSBERG we use European black locust and at NUSSER the local Douglas fir. We also have a variety of hardwoods. For highest quality and durability we use tropical hardwood, FSC certified.
Normally we do not stain the slats on our benches. After several months, the wood surface will turn silver gray from UV-light and will last from anywhere between 10 and 20 or more years.
On customer request, we will stain the wood slats with a wood preservative. This gives the wood a more dark appearance, but the staining needs to be redone almost every year or at least every other year. Because of high maintenance cost, most of our customers therefore prefer unstained wood.
Douglas fir has been increasingly available in Germany and eastern European forests. Relative to other pine type woods, Douglas fir is denser and more durable. On occasion, however, it will bleed a little resin around knots and growth lines. On the wood slats we supply, occasional small knots will have to be tolerated. Please request a sample.
The tropical timber Kambala is desired by our customers, if durability and toughness are asked to weathering. Due to good availability in larger widths and versatile good qualities it has numerous applications in outdoor areas. Kambala is very weather resistant and becomes gray without additional protection within a few months.
There is a heated debate over the use of tropical hardwood. People are most concerned about the loss of rainforests. In many cases in the past and still in part today, tropical hardwood has been harvested by forest clearing.
Today, however, many countries with rainforests have adopted sustainable harvesting methods. For the most part, this change has been brought about by organisations that certify this sustainability to consumers of such tropical hardwood and actually verify the path of the wood from the source to the consumer. The best known and most reputable of these organizations is the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). Their certification starts in the rainforests, goes on to the saw mills, the trading companies, the manufacturers and then to the distributors of the wood products. All parties in that chain have to be certified by the FSC®. Their certification ultimately assures the consumer, that the tropical hardwood used comes from sustainably managed rainforests.
Back in 2009, Nusser has been certified by the FSC®. Our certification number is SCS-COC-001802 and our license code is FSC-C012729.
The availability of certified tropical hardwood is somewhat limited. The type of hardwood we normally use is Iroko (also known as Kambala). On occasion we also use Sapele.

Thermowood is produced by thermal treatment of wood at about 180° C, altering the natural cell structure. The wood is much darker. We work mainly with indigenous hardwoods, such as Ash. The treated wood is very weather resistant. We supply thermal timber usually with wood preservative to protect, upon request from untreated. It therefore represents a good alternative to tropical wood.
Pagholz® is a technical material that is made from local beech wood. The plate material is formed from pressed beech veneer with resin. Pagholz® is very tough and weather resistant. Thus, it is ideally suited for park benches. Pagholz® is not additionally coated and does not require special care.
The material combines the advantages of acrylic glass with those of plastic. By connecting an impact-resistant plastic core with a weather-resistant and very tough acrylic surface an ideal material for furniture in outdoor public spaces is created. Slats of acrylic resin and substructures made of galvanized, powder-coated steel or cast aluminum guarantee high quality for many years.
Slats of acrylic resin have good self-cleaning characteristics, since dirt particles have only a low adhesion to the acrylic surface. Even graffiti can be removed with mineral spirits or turpentine (no acetone). Thus acrylic surfaces are completely weatherproof, even sea water and road salt can't cause any damage. Stubborn stains can be easily removed with a cloth, water and washing up liquid.
The acrylic surface allows a wide range of colors and different surface optics. In testing for UV light resistance was shown that the coloured surface, even if it is exposed through years of weathering, does not change.
Electropolishing makes stainless steels extremely durable, but also is applied often for decorative purposes, for example for facade panels and jewelry. Electropolishing also is applied in medical technology, for the electropolishing decreases the adhesion of germinals. Therefore surgical instruments, as well as implants such as stents (stents) are processed in such a way.
The reason for this lies in the fact that highly polished surfaces are far more resistant to corrosion than untreated in fact. By such treatment the surface is considerably reduced, which in turn provides environmental influences less invasive options.
